Describe a character from the book. Say why you like/
dislike the character
The Character Mr. Birling:
Mr. Birling is a “heavy-looking” rather portentous man
in his middle fifties.
He is a factory owner, not the social equal one like
his wife.
His priority is to make money. “It`s my duty to keep
labour costs down”.
He tells the Inspector, that he wouldn`t listen to Eva
Smiths demand for a wage rise, “I refused of cause” and he is surprised why
anyone should ask questions about it.
He is optimistic about the future.” Yet we know that,
what he predicts will not come true”.
Mr. Birling refused to accept any responsibility for
Eva`s death.
He is totally shocked, that his own son, Eric turns
out to be a thief, a drunkard and is responsible for fathering a child.
When he learns of all this muddle, he says: you damned
fool- why didn`t you come to me, when you found yourself in this mess?”
Eric`s reply indicates, that Mr. Birling was never
close to his son. “Because you are not that kind of chap a man would turn to,
when he`s in trouble”.
Mr. Birling is a businessman, who is only interested
in making money.
I don’t like Mr. Birling, because he is arrogant and
extremely selfish. He only wants to protect his reputation. “I`ve got to cover
this up as soon as I can”.
